Brand switch

29 Oct 2008

After a good many years with Canon I have made a drastical desicion to switch brands to Nikon. Not that I have not been happy with my Canon cameras, they have all been great, but lately I have liked Nikon's way of developing new camera models more than Canon's approach. While Canon seems to be stuck on the megapixel train, Nikon is working on optimizing other parameters that may provide more increase in image quality than more pixels. A good example is the Canon EOS 40D and 50D. After having the 10 megapixel 40D on the market for one year, Canon introduced the 50D this autumn, with a 15 megapixel sensor. However, rather detailed tests have shown that despite the 50% increase in the number of pixels, there is no apparent gain when it comes to image detail. Nikon on the other hand seems to keep the pixel count down (they do not provide any digital SLR with more than 12 megapixels today), but they do provide excellent results on higher ISO sensitivities with really good noise control.

Also, there is some good Nikon equipment in the household already, and we have felt that it is a bit less than optimal to build on two camera systems. So, when I recently had an accident with my EOS 40D with battery grip, EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM and angle finder, the insurance money gave the opportunity. I was in the process of re-investing about half of my camera equipment. After a long and hard thought (and after considering a new 40D, new 50D, used 5D, used 1D mark II, ...) I decided that this is the time to switch. And yesterday I got my new tool, a Nikon D300. Ah, I am already in love. Feels like coming home.

Took it out for a little bonding today. The view is towards Copenhagen from Barsebäck.

In the shift between october and november there will be the annual nature photo festival in Vårgårda with lots of image exhibitions and image shows. One of those exibitions will be organized by NaturFotoForum, and one of my images has been selected to be part of that exhibition (along with 14 other images from other photographers).

My image is this one:

Unfortunately I will not be able to go there. It would have been really fun to see the exhibition live, not to mention all other exhibitions. Seems as if I will be going after all. See you there, I guess :o)
